how to play piano and singMost people who learn to play piano have some ambitions of performing eventually. This may involve singing. Piano is one of the very best instruments to accompany vocals, and for decades we’ve marveled at the abilities of singer-songwriters like Stevie Wonder and Billy Joel as they entertain crowds for hours with just a piano. Learning how to play piano and sing at the same time is challenging, and may feel like learning your instrument all over again. We’ve provided some top tips to gain this exciting skill.

Know The Song Inside Out

Choose a song that you want to master, and make sure you know it inside out. You should learn the lyrics first. Practice singing along to the song in the car, listen to it dozens of times a day and get the lyrics and structure of the track ingrained in your brain.

At the same time, or after you’ve learned the lyrics, you can learn the piano separately. Do not try to combine them yet. Learn the chords as accompaniment and play along to the song if you feel comfortable doing so. This will help you to play in time.

Once you’ve learned the parts separately, you can begin to combine them. If you need to, you can simplify this, too. Learn a verse at a time combining piano and singing, or just play the chords on one hand to keep things simple. It’s a case of making steady progress.

By knowing both parts (piano and vocals) separately you will be reducing the strain on your brain when you eventually come to combine the two. If you don’t even need to think about the vocals or look at the lyrics while you are playing, it will be far easier.

Knowing how to play piano and sing is largely down to practice and repetition, but breaking it down into individual parts is a way to simplify the process.

Choose a Simple Song

It sounds like a basic and easy tip, but often, people take on more than they can handle while learning piano. You might choose a song you love rather than a song that is appropriate to be your first experiment with piano and singing.

Simple, straightforward chords and songs that are recommended for beginners are a good place to start.

It is far better to get a simple song correct than to take on a complex song and keep failing. Plus, you’re more likely to stick to your task if you are experiencing success. Avant-garde jazz may be your favorite, but it’s probably tough to get right, and you’re more likely to give up on it.

Get Your Posture Right

This guide includes some great information on how your posture should look and feel when you are playing piano. It is vitally important that you can breathe comfortably, and this means you have one less thing to worry about while playing piano and singing.

The correct posture can also make your singing sound much more professional and clear while you are playing, and get you ready for performances.

Practice, Practice, Practice

It isn’t the most fun and glamorous tip. When learning how to play piano and sing together, you need to spend plenty of time sat at the keyboard or piano, and not be afraid to get things wrong. Keep practicing and eventually, it will begin to feel a lot easier. The tips we share at Pianu can help you to learn piano, but the key will always be using these techniques during your practice and repeating the songs you want to play over and over again until you perfect your technique.
